Tweeting the Arab Revolutions

"Would you come to Sweden?"

Of course I would, was my answer !

It was during a conversation with Yasmine El Rafie in Cairo, back in July .. We thought it would be interesting to organise a symposium on Twitter journalism. Yasmine seemed very interested in my experience as a micro-blogger and seemed very aware of the intercacies of the double role of a mainstream media reporter : on screen / online.

So one day I got the invitation to Sweden.. It was an event about Internet and Democratic Change where I met lots of interesting net activisits.

My part was scheduled at the end of the day. And who better than the one and only Sultan el Qassemi to share this experience with?

I really enjoyed the spontaneous conversation with Sultan about our respective experiences living the Arab revolutions and covering them through Twitter. I think we should do a world tour :)

How Mona Was Assaulted by Egypt's Police

At around 5am Caracas local time I finally went to sleep. When I woke up just 3 hours later I quickly grabbed my blackberry to find out about Mona Eltahawy. And she had already been released.

She had experienced 12 hours of detention in Egypt. In this video she tells her ordeal and how she was beaten and abused by the Egyptian police. She has one broken arm and one broken hand !

Just a few hours earlier I had written about
Mona and prayed - ironically - that she would not "go through the same abuse that she works so hard to save other women from" !

Sadly such treatment by the police is not proper to Egypt. Unfortunately it often goes unreported in most Arab countries.

Find out about Jehane Noujaim, another Egyptian-American detained in Egypt until the time of posting this video The Jehane I know is No Spy !

Thank you Marwan Al Muraisy for the video

The Jehane I Know is No Spy !

Doha, Qatar. 2003. A friend of mine from Spain called me up to ask for help. A friend of his was coming from New York to make another documentary on Al Jazeera. Oh ! Yet another one? Everyone was coming to make a documentary about Al Jazeera back then !

Jehane Noujaim's idea caught my attention. She wanted to follow individuals who work at Al Jazeera and feature them in a documentary. I suggested a few people and indeed she turned up in Doha.

I found her to be a very artistic person. Her way of not dressing like everyone else. Very feminine, yet simple. Always looking fresh and positive. Definitely a very creative person. She had just won awards for her debut documentary
Startup.com

We became friends and I enjoyed helping her out around Al Jazeera as she filmed her documentary. Somehow she managed to get a few comments from me too, here and there, as the war on Iraq started and I was one of 4 news producers running the continuous live coverage out of Al Jazeera's headquarters.

I was surprised when her documentary was released that she had actually given me a much bigger role in her
Control Room than I ever thought. When I asked her later she said something like : well I couldn't help it, I wanted to include a female figure in there and you were just the girl ! :)

The documentary won many awards and spread the story of Al Jazeera like no other documentary.

Recently when I was in Cairo I missed her by a day or two. She was filming something too... which leads me to her arrest in Tahrir Square a few hours ago! She is reported to have been filming clashes on Mohammed Mahmoud Street near the Interior Ministry when she got arrested by the police and accused of being a spy !

Jehane is a US citizen, born in Washington DC. She is of Egyptian origin, speaks Arabic with a beautiful, mild accent.

I am told by one Egyptian
rafeeq on Twitter that he had been to see her at Abdin Police Station in Cairo. He says she is in high spirits (I am not surprised, knowing her) and that she is to be released later today.

I really hope they have treated her well and hope she will make another fabulous documentary to tell the world what has been happening in Egypt. Her arrest comes at the same time as Mona el Tahawy's arrest, another American-Egyptian who was at Tahrir Square. I just wrote a blogpost about
Mona ! too.

I hope not to write any more blogposts about friends arrested in Egypt! As the government claims "bad" people who want to destroy Egypt are the ones in Tahrir, I keep hearing of good people I know getting arrested there ! It feels like the 8 of April 2003 when we were too busy reporting on reporters killed and injured, we did not know how the US troops got into Baghdad the next day. It is ironically the story Jehane tells in her documentary.

One more thing, if I get to talk to Jehane I want to tell her am finally forgiving her for mis-spelling my name (as Deema Khatib) on the cover of
 Control Room :)

Mona !

When I first joined Twitter just over a year ago, Mona el Tahawy was among the first Arab tweeps that I got to meet on line. I followed her tweeting with utmost interest and I remember visiting her blog and reading about her tweeting experience. I got so inspired by her and wanted in a way to be active on Twitter like her.

Later on when I started blogging I remember wondering how she made her blog look so great. It had so many interesting things. I looked up to her and her activism, online and offline.

Apart from a few exchanges on Twitter - about her beautiful traditional Egyptian jewelery -, Mona and I have never actually met in person or skyped or talked on the phone. But I feel I have known Mona for years. Mind you, I don't agree with all of her views, she probably doesn't agree with all of mine either. But I have deep respect for her. She is that Arab woman that will go as far as possible, and further each time she can, to defend every other Arab and non Arab woman. She has been amazing on US media outlets, transmitting that passion we all have for change in the Arab World now that our people are demanding it and working for it. Sometimes they get killed, arrested, injured, abused, raped, etc for it.

Ironically now Mona is one of those casualites. I think she only just arrived in Egypt a couple of days ago at most.

I am not sure how she got arrested but it was just over an hour ago. Last thing we know from her tweets is that she was on Mohamed Mahmoud Street, off Tahrir Square, a few hours ago. Then she sent a tweet telling us she is beaten and arrested at the Ministry of Interior.

Luckily for Mona she recently obtained the US nationality. Luckily, I say, because it means that she is more likely to be freed than other Egyptian citizens. Luckily, yet sadly.

Mona's arrest is yet another sign of how the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces  (SCAF) is really just as bad as Mubarak or worse. Killing protesters, arresting them, torturing them. Mona has been very vocal in past months about SCAF's dictatorship. Her arrest will help raise more awareness about this bitter reality, while prostesters across Egypt are continuing their unfinished revolution.

I hope Mona is released soon. I pray she does not go through the same abuse that she works so hard to save other women from.

Tahrir clashes during the Egyptian Revolution in November 2011

By RamyYaacoub

Y luego : "Bien hecho, carajo" !

English Version
Mas escritos sobre Egipto
Mas escritos en español

Like Syria, Like Egypt ? Not Quite, But.. !

For months after the fall of Mubarak we all wrote about the Great Egyptian Army, because it stood by the Egyptian Revolution.. How many times we wished the other Arab armies in rebelling countries would act like the Egyptian army. Little did we know that the day would come when we'd see some of the appalling practices by the Syrian thugs / security forces / army now being used in a similar way by their Egyptian peers, acting under the Egyptian Army's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces !

This video is a true reflection of how they are all alike. A policeman actually shot this video from the policemen's side off Tahrir Square during a confrontation with protesters at whom the policemen are seen shooting live ammunition. And the video was posted on youtube so everyone can see what a great time the policemen and their accompanying thugs are having while killing protesters. This is exactly what Syria's thugs & security / army forces have been doing : posting their own videos of how they humiliate the people and .. sadistically enjoy it.

At second 00:45 a policeman says bragging : "It hit him in the eye"
Then we hear repeatedly : "It hit him in his mother f***ing eye"
And then : "Well done, buddy" !

Not as bad as Syria, of course. But it is the same attitude and the same outcome : death, pain, blood, suffering, humiliation, brutal repression.

The same regimes spill the same evil and they will face the same fate at the hands of their own victims.

Egypt's Virginity Tests

Samira is the only girl out of 7 who decided to press charges at the Military prosecution after she was subjected to a humiliating virginity test while being detained for having participated in a demo. Now she is getting death threats from unkown numbers on her phone.
Oh.. one small detail, this is not from Mubarak's era. This is happening after his fall, under the Military Junta's rule.
A very sad story. You can jump to 9:45 for the most humiliating part. If you are not familiar with Arab and muslim cultures, bear in mind that nudity is quite a big taboo in our culture, and the test itself would be humiliating in any culture, but more so in ours, where many women choose female doctors for example because taking your clothes off in front of men, even for medical reasons, is not something many are comfortable with.

New Military Unit To Fight Crime in Venezuela

It was late at night. I was already in bed. And as usual, every time I go to bed early, I get a phone call from Al Jazeera asking for a phoner !

There were around 700 kidnapping cases officially registered in Venezuela in 2010 and God knows how many homicides..

Days after Baseball Star Wilson Ramos' rescue from a 51-hour kidnapping ordeal, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned today that the criminals are not the poor, as he created a new military unit to help fight crime..

I hate how I keep saying am am ... half asleep I guess ! :)

How Twitter Got a Reuters Reporter Sacked !

It was just a tweet.. that turned into many tweets.. that turned into a hashtag.. that turned into global noise.. that turned into action. A Twitter Snowball !

That is in a nutshell the story I intend to tell you the way I lived it.

On 11 November Hind Eryani told me on Twitter that Reuters reporter in Yemen was also Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh's personal translator. I doubted she would be right about this because I know Reuters and have always considered it one of the most reliable sources of information in the world. Reuters would not do such a thing.

But as Hind and I discussed it, other Yemenis read our tweets and started sending us evidence. I wondered how come they knew about this but never said a word. I follow the news almost 24 hours a day and I had no idea.

There were even press articles in which the title itself refers to Mohammed Sudam as "Reuters correspondent and the President's Translator" such as this one in Arabic about his kidnap in October.

Anyway I decided to write just 1 or 2 tweets about it, with caution, because I work for a media organisation myself and I usually avoid direct attacks against other media organisations, especially one that I respect-ed very much.

I was truly surprised though. How could Reuters accept to compromise on its ethics by allowing its repoter to work simultaneously for the man at the very centre of events rocking Yemen for the past 9 months?

It did not take long before Hind talked to Marwan Al Muraisy, another Yemeni activist to come up with a cool hashtag.. that is how the Twitter hashtag #ShameOnReuters was born and it immediately started attracting attention. Tweets were flowing in.

I myself forgot about this
amid other things happening, especially in Syria, and did not contribute to the hashtag. By the next day Hind had already written a blogpost in Arabic: Reuters in the Government's Pocket and so did Noon Arabia, yet another Yemeni activist who wrote in English in Global Voices : Yemen Netcitizens Accuse Reuters of Biased Reporting

And in no time there was a facebook page too Shame On Reuters created by Taha Abdoh

France24 was the first media organisation to pick up the story and report on it in both Arabic and English, at least.

Some of the tweets were displayed. Hind was interviewed in the Arabic version and she gave an example of what she claimed was false reporting done recently by Reuters about Saleh's intention to resign (again and again!). France24 - Arabic - contacted Reuters about it and Reuters replied with the following statement:
"For more than 160 years, Reuters coverage has been a trusted source in the Middle East. Mohammed Sudam's contributions to the file as a stringer are balanced and meet the high standards we set for the news organization globally"

Interestingly enough, Reuters' first reaction was just like any Arab Leader's first speech in the face of an uprising against him : arrogant, in-denial, careless.

Other non Yemeni bloggers also wrote about it, such as Brian Withaker. I did too, in Arabic. The news was spreading on Twitter and Facebook even more.

Yemeni activists started discussing what else they can do after Reuters' cold response. They consoled each other by saying that at least the world now knows about it. And they kept doing the same thing : tweeting and tweeting about it.

Until ... the New York Times reported on it : Reuters Reporter Also Works For Yemen's President . When you read the title you realise something is wrong. These two jobs are not compatible, unless the reporter works for the President's media. How could Reuters not see that for so many years?

Then came the Washington Post article : Journalist Working for the Government, No Problem?

And suddenly it hit Reuters. And the following statement was released :

“Sudam’s work as a Reuters stringer over the course of many years has been fair and accurate. When he became a translator for the president, he disclosed his role to Reuters. On reviewing the matter, however, we believe it’s not appropriate to use a stringer who is also working for the government. He is no longer reporting for us from Yemen.”

So, after a first "typical Arab Leader" response, Reuters did not wait till the typical 3rd speech before "stepping down" (as Mubarak and Ben Ali did). May be
our Arab leaders can learn from Reuters two-speeches-in-one-week stepping-down strategy!  :-)

Once again social media has proven it can bring to light stories not covered by conventional media, or stories about conventional / mainstream media like this one, which mainstream media feel obliged to pick up and cover.

It is the true empowerment of citizens who now have what I call the Fifth Power, which can sometimes shake all other four powers.

Certainly on this one it is quite an achievement for Yemeni activists who are not
as present on the web as activists from Syria, Bahrain, Tunisia and Eygpt.

 #ShameOnReuters

Yemen: Netizens Accuse Reuters of Biased Reporting

6. Ningún país africano votó NO.
